Improv in Vegas, Alive and Well!
By DW Grant
Las Vegas is a city of entertainers, so why not become one? Be it for fame, fortune, self improvement or just plain fun, its not that hard to make the thespian transformation in the entertainment capital of the world.
Begin by walking into “Get Your Improv On,” a fun and easy family-friendly game night meeting at Vegas City Artz dance studio near the intersection of Charleston and Rainbow on Saturday nights.
At about 7pm, Rose Heeter begins tossing players from ages 7 to 70 up into a series of crazy improvisational stage games designed to bring out the Wayne Brady or Colin Mochrie in anyone.
Rose Heeter, a Hollywood veteran, who has acted in many movies and doubled for actresses like Sharon Stone and Kim Bassinger, says her class is a “No Fail” opportunity to stretch a personality.
Each class is a nutty two hour session of turning ordinary items like hats and coats, frying
pans, empty fiber bottles, teddy bears, and cell phones into hilarious theater props and ordinary people into the entertainers they dreamed of but never thought they could be.
“Every game is about a minute to two minutes long,” says Rose, also the founder of “Get Cast!!! Film Actors Studio,” a 1,000 member network for and about actors. “It’s not long enough (the game) to fail but long enough make your heart pump and laughter come up from your soul.”
Games range from the easier “Prop Off” where a contestant selects three or more items from the prop table and then wings a performance off the top of their head to “Alphabet.” In this game the audience suggests a subject and two actors must converse back and forth using sentences beginning with A and traveling to Z. The first contestant to miss the next letter loses and the winner gets to star in the next game.
Members of the audience aren’t safe, however. A very popular game is “Find the Celebrity” where actors pull audience members on stage and force them to become celebrities like Micheal Jackson, Barak Obama, Miley Cirus, or even King Kamehameha.
Players also have an opportunity to win cash prizes and have their performance broadcast on the internet.
“Get Your Improv On!” meets Satuday nights at 7pm at the Vegas City Arts Performing Arts Academy, 6700 W. Charleston Blvd, Studio G. Performances are $5 to participate in and/or be a part of the audience. For more information call Rose Heeter at 702-594-4198 or visit www.getcastinvegas.com.
If “Get Your Improv On!” wets your stage mojo, the next step up the ladder maybe “LVFreeze,” an improv school meeting in “The Box Office” at the intersection of Charleston and Casino Center.
The Goal of LvFreeze is to make performing improv troupes. The Classes include ”Improv 101″ an introduction to improv games, theater games, and improv fundamentals. “Guerrilla Improv 201″ stage presence, acting skills, building characters, and intermediate improv scene-work. ”Advanced Lvfreeze 301″ building a troupe, practice and performance of improv.
Says LvFreeze founder Grant A. Waters, “Our four week workshops are designed for anyone and everyone who wants to loosen up, be more spontaneous, and learn to take risks both on stage and in life.”
As challenging as that may sound Mr. Waters is very assuring that the “no grade/no judgement” classes are very low pressure. “Classes are generally hilarious and a lot of fun and are designed to release natural creativity and humor.”
Where “Get Your Improv On!” is a wacky game night “LvFreeze” classes move to teach participants both the humorous and serious side of improvisational theater. Course material includes theater games, skill building exercises, and related acting exercises.
“Improv basics is the perfect way to explore improv,” says Mr. Waters. “We focus on Improv Theater and trying to create strong characters in detailed situations. There is no need to be funny and no pressure to make people laugh. Humor may arise out of a scene or may not. The quality of the scenes is in character depth. Essentially, we focus on creating live theater minus the script. A well-done scene is one where no one would believe the work wasn’t scripted.”
Teachers include Rose Heeter, Grant Waters, and Chili Bowles who received his improv training at the Groundlings in Los Angeles, and went on to become a featured writer, founding member, and acting instructor for the Street School Artist Collective in Los Angeles.
New classes start the first week of every month and cost $20 a session. Discounts are given if an actor brings friends.
“The Box Office” is located at 1129 S Casino Center Blvd. _________________ GET CAST!!! in VEGA$$$
