AD: An abbreviation of an advertisement or advertising. "Ad work" means a still photography session for a specific product.
An abbreviation for ASSISTANT DIRECTOR on a project for TV - STAGE - FILM OR COMMERCIAL

ADVERTISING AGENCY: An agency that creates advertising campaigns for clients and selects models.

AFTRA: American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, union for all TV performers.

AGENT, AGENCY: A third party negotiator that receives percentage fee of bookings; could be an individual person or a company.

ART DIRECTOR: An artist who creates layout for ads and illustrates models' poses.

BACKDROP: A background used in a photographer's studio.

BEAUTY SHOT, BEAUTY AD: A full-face photograph that would be used for
a magazine cover or an ad for cosmetics.

BLOCKING: Physical movements by actors in any scene.

BLOWUP: An enlarged photo from a negative or a slide.

BOOK (noun): See PORTFOLIO.

BOOK (verb): To secure a job.

BOOKER: A member of the staff of a modeling agency whose job it is to handle the requests from clients for models.

BOOKING: A specific job assignment.

BOOK OUT: Time when a model is unavailable to work for certain day(s) (e.g., a vacation or another job).

BREAKDOWN SERVICE: A professional listing available only to agencies, that lists movies, film, TV, and stage projects with the types of actors being cast.

BUYER: A retail store employee who purchases clothing from the manufacturer. Models showcase the line of clothing to store buyers.

BUYOUT: An advance payment for future use of a print ad or a commercial for a specific period of time.

CALL: An appointment.

CALLBACK: A second interview after go-see or an audition.

CALL TIME: Actual time one is due on the set.

CASTING: Selecting models or actors for a specific job.

CASTING DIRECTOR: A professional who selects suitable models and actors to audition for a project.

CANCELLATION: A 24-hour notice before booking is to begin or money is due.

CATALOG MODELING: Posing for mail order items for major retailers.

CATTLE CALL: A general type of a casting session where several agencies send hundreds of models or actors.

CLIENT: Any person that retains the services of a model or actor.

COLD READING: A script that one reads for the first time in front of the client, without memorizing the lines.

COLLECTION: A group of coordinated clothes being shown by a designer.

COMMENTARY: A script used to describe clothes for a fashion show.

COMMERCIAL: A film or tape appearance by a model for television, radio or other media advertising a specific product.

COMMISSION: The sum deducted from a model's and actor's earnings by his or her agency for their services.

COMPOSITE CARD, COMP CARD, CARD: A card with 3-5 photos of a model and his or her height, eye and hair color, and size information used to promote and distribute to prospective clients.

CONTACT SHEET: A page showing several exposures from the same roll of black and white film used to determine the best shots.

COPY: Written words to be spoken on a commercial.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR: An ad agency employee who determines the actor and model type.

CREDITS: Paid jobs a model or actor has completed successfully.

DAY RATE: A fee that an actor or model receives for a single booking that lasts the entire day.

DEMONSTRATOR: A model or actor, that shows use of product at a trade show or store.

DESIGNER: A professional who creates the idea for a garment.

DRESSER: A professional who helps models and actors, dress backstage for fashion or stage shows.

DUBBING: A process of replacing the voice of the model or actor in a commercial by using a professional voice.

ENLARGEMENT: See BLOW UP.

EQUITY: See AEA.

EXTRA: An acting job where an actor has no speaking lines, but stands in the background to add to the atmosphere of a scene.

FADS: An overdone fashion; passing craze.

FASHION COORDINATOR: A professional who puts fashion show outfits together in retail stores.

FASHION TRENDS: Gradual changes in fashion styles.

FEES: Amount of money per hour.

FIT MODELING: Modeling the original sample garment to test for sizing. Clients choose a model whose measurements exactly match the sample size.

FITTING: Trying on clothes to determine fit and style; usually before a fashion show or movie.

FLAT RATE: Fee for a model's or actor's services which is negotiated on the basis of a one-time-only payment and which excludes future payment of royalties or residuals.

FLIPPER: False teeth used for young children to temporarily fill in for lost teeth.

FORMAL FASHION SHOW, RUNWAY SHOW: A fashion event at which models are required to follow a set format of timed appearances walking down the runway to show designer clothing.

FREELANCE: Modeling for many clients without agency representation.

FULL-LENGTH SHOT: A head to toe photograph.

GO-SEE: A job interview; model or actor meets a client and shows portfolio. A model is not paid for time spent on go-sees, and top models are rarely required to go on them.

HAIR STYLIST: A professional who works on hair changes.

HEADSHOT: An 8 x 10 size photo of head and shoulders.

HEADSHEET: An agency sheet, poster or book of models they represent used for promotion to existing and prospective clients. In many cases only the heads of the models are shown with vital information about every model handled by the agency.

HIGH FASHION: An extreme, chic, sophisticated model type.
HOLD: When the agency puts you "on hold" for a job, it means the client is seriously considering you and wants you to keep the time available for them first (if anything else comes up for that time, you must notify the agency before accepting another job).

ILLUSTRATION MODEL: A model that poses for artists.

ILLUSTRATOR: Also called a fashion illustrator. A professional who draws fashion for advertising or editorial purposes. Many use models to pose in the clothes they are required to draw so that their renderings are accurate.

INDUSTRIAL: A non-broadcast production, often educational or sales films and tapes.

INFORMAL FASHION SHOW: A fashion show with models circulating at random throughout an audience in such places as stores and restaurants.

JUNIOR MODEL: A model of youthful type, animated. A model that fits this category is able to wear odd-size garments (5-7-9) and is slender but not as tall as a high fashion model.

LINES: Script, words.

LINEUP: A position of a model and a garment in a fashion show.

LOCATION: An assignment site outside the studio.

LOUPE: A small magnifying glass to see slides and contact sheet images eight times larger.

MAKEUP ARTIST: A professional who applies and changes makeup for photo sessions and movies.

MARKET, JOB MARKET: Any location where one can find a job. The fashion business "market" centers on Seventh Avenue in New York. It consists of all the designers and manufacturers of apparel and accessories. Going to the market indicates selecting all the items to be worn by a model for a fashion shooting.

MARKET WEEK: Takes places 4-6 times per year when seasonal clothing lines are shown to buyers.

MISSES: The ideal model for this category wears even sizes (6-8-10). She is slim in build and is closer to high fashion in height than a junior. Ages usually appear to be between 22 and 25.

MODEL BAG: A large tote in which you carry all your makeup and working essentials.

MODEL RELEASE: A contract in which a model gives permission to use his or her photos as the client specifies.

MODEL AGENCY: An institution that represents models for employment and receives a percentage of the bookings.

MONOLOGUE: A scene performed by an aspiring or a professional actor for a client that reflects a particular mood and demonstrates one's acting talent.

MOOD: Feeling a model projects to suit the specific assignment.

ON HOLD: See HOLD.

OPEN CALL: Casting when the client sees all models and actors suitable for the type requested.

PENALTY FEE: If a client requires a model or actor to effect a change in his or her appearance which is permanent (such as hair dying or cutting), the model's agency will often negotiate a "penalty fee" in addition to the regular rate in order to remunerate the model for the loss of future earnings brought about by her changed look.

PORTFOLIO: A collection of photographs and clippings of a model that he or she shows to prospective clients. It usually takes the form of a loose-leaf ring binder.

PRINCIPAL: The main performer in the foreground.

PRINT: A photograph printed in newspaper or magazine form. Pictures that are the final result of a photographer's efforts are called prints.

PRINTWORK: Photography taken for catalog and mail order, books, brochures, ads for magazines or newspapers, magazine covers, commercial photography for household products, business products and services, glamour products. Print work excludes all types of modeling, which are live or recorded live.

PRODUCER: A professional who is responsible for the day-to-day decision-making on a production.

PRODUCT CONFLICT: Representing competitive products. This type of situation should be avoided.

PRODUCTION COMPANY: A company that produces videos for viewing.

PROMOTION: Publicity to advance a product, a service or a person.

PROOF: An intermediate stage of photo development from which one can choose the best poses.

PROPS: Short for the term "stage properties." Covers the wide range of items used by models in the course of their work other than the clothes and accessories they actually wear.

PUBLIC RELATIONS: Creating an image of a product or service in the eyes of the public, mainly through newspaper articles.

RATE: A sum of money that a client is required to pay for a model's or actor's, services. The more successful the model or actor, the higher his or her rate. Most models have different rates according to the type of booking. For short bookings, an hourly rate (e.g. $75 per hour) is usually applied. Longer periods may require a day rate (e.g. $500 per day). Top models sometimes increase their rates if they are required to go out of town on location. Most agencies charge double or triple of a model's
regular rate if he or she is booked for underwear, lingerie or **************************** work.
SAG Actors start at $800/8

RELEASE: Every booking represents a contractual agreement between the client and the model or actor. A model or actor release spells out the terms of the agreement and includes the limit to which the photos and or video, may be used.

RESHOOT: A performer may be called back by a client to repeat a print or television commercial booking if the first results were not satisfactory. Under normal circumstances the model is paid for a "reshoot".

RESIDUALS: A fee received by a model and actor, in addition to the flat rate received for the time spent making a commercial. Residuals are calculated according to the amount of airplay the commercial is given. Residuals may amount to thousands of dollars over long periods of time if commercials are successful. The unions dictate this type of rate.

ROUNDS: Calling on prospective clients for photography and television.

RUNWAY: A narrow raised platform on which a model shows the clothing.
